Skin failure is a phenomenon encountered in patients at the end of life. The lack of consensus around appropriate terminology can result in confusion, potential misdiagnosis, and mismanagement. Skin failure includes Kennedy Terminal Ulcers (KTU), Skin Changes At Life’s End (SCALE), Trombley-Brennan terminal tissue injuries, and unavoidable pressure injuries. In this session, the pathophysiological concepts associated with skin failure, how to recognise and identify them, and treatment goals will be discussed.
