This presentation will discuss the current status of diagnosis and management of mate wareware (dementia) in Māori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). The soon-to-be-released tool for assessing cognition in Māori – the MANA – will be discussed. The domains assessed in the MANA are guided by themes that have been identified in a multi-centre study as being important to Māori in the assessment of cognition. These themes include: mind (hinengaro), spirit (wairua), body (tinana), family (whānau), social connection (whanaungatanga), identity and role (tuakiri), place (wāhi), and ancestors (tūpuna). The history of Māori health in NZ helps to inform current Māori cognitive health, and a brief overview will be discussed.
