Participation in the Arts has revealed overwhelmingly positive cognitive and quality of life outcomes for older aged adults. Advantages include social support, self-motivation and improvements in self-esteem, sense of identity, anxiety and depression. The multi-modal nature of arts participation is thought to improve cognition and sense of wellbeing via its association with brain plasticity, cognitive reserve and neural pathways. This presentation focuses on the role of visual arts in supporting wellbeing of older adults. An Art and Dementia program is showcased, which has been developed using evidence-based research to enhance psychosocial wellbeing and quality of life using non-pharmacological intervention. In the absence of disease modifying treatments and despite brain pathology, perhaps we can sustain brain function and psychosocial health of those living with dementia and support the wellbeing of their care partners.
